Control Your Hunger, Get the Body You Deserve

By Ezday On February 1, 2010 Under Ezday

When undergoing a weight loss routine you may have sudden uncontrollable urges to eat. Dealing with these urges is important, because if you give into them you will deviate from your course, and you do not want to do that. Controlling hunger can vary in difficulty from person to person but there are a few things you can do to take care of it. Again no one said losing weight was going to be easy.

Unless you’re one of the people that suffers from high acid production and needs to eat or suffer heartburn the rest of the night, simply denying the hunger pang can work. This takes a lot of willpower and doesn’t always work out. Remind yourself that you need to avoid eating this late in order to reach your long term goal. Remind yourself why you are doing this in the first place. If all else falls remind yourself that your sensei won’t acknowledge you as a man if you don’t fight off the urge. If any of you get the joke in the last part I’m going to be disturbed and go hide somewhere.

Now onto more serious matters, what can you do to fight off hunger pangs? Well one thing you can do when you establish your diet is make a buffer zone. A buffer zone is an amount of calories, carbs, and fats, which you allow yourself in the event something like this happens. You always maintain the buffer zone and work it into your calculations. That way if you absolutely need to eat you can do this without messing up your routine.

You don’t necessarily have to eat anything high in calories to get the pangs to stop. Normally just eating anything will make your stomach shut up. But make sure it’s healthy, one bowl of ice cream can mess you up for the week. There are great deals of foods that can help you control these midnight urges. Of course I shouldn’t say midnight urges, they can strike any time, and even wake you up if they are bad enough.

First and foremost remember that in most cases you have a lot of acid in your stomach that needs something to do, that may be why you are hungry. So try eating a piece of bread, or other absorbing food. It may not be the tastiest but it’s definitely not the worst thing to eat when this hits. You can also try having single serving low calorie yogurts on hand. Or low calorie ice cream, again watch the amount. But again it all comes back to will power.

Being able to resist the pang, and if you must eat eating only so much can be a very taxing thing to do. Controlling hunger is never easy. If you do decide to give into the pang then you may lose control and start eating everything in sight, in addition to what you had in your buffer zone. This is a bad thing, of course that goes without telling.

Another reason you may be experiencing hunger pangs is because your body is use to a higher food intake. You will be hungry out of habit of constantly being full. But needing to be full doesn’t mean you need to eat a lot. There are many foods that fill a person; these include foods with fiber and whole grains. They tend to make your stomach think it’s full and will quiet it down. Veggies and fruits can also help. If that doesn’t work try nuts with low sodium content, not many just a few.

The physiological factor of always having to eat is probably one of the biggest things people have to fight off when they start a weight loss routine. The mind has fallen into a habit of eating three or four big meals a day and is now stuck with two or three normal sized meals. Not to mention some kind of health dessert instead of cake or ice cream. This can make your system go haywire at first, but after it’s under control you will still suffer hunger pangs.

Stopping them completely isn’t a real possibility. Even after you lose to your target weight you will still get them. By that time hopefully you are strong enough to resist them, if not keep up your buffer zone. Many people have reached their goals only to fall backwards because they lost their self control. This can be a very painful thing to recover from, so keep up your willpower and resist the pangs.

Some people are able to resist them by themselves, but if you find you need help then call your friends, and or support group. They can stay with you and remind you not to eat should the hunger pang arrive. Some may in fact swat you on the head with something if they catch you eating, but they are doing it because they care about you, not because they hate you. After all it takes a real friend to spend the night at someone’s house and keep them from eating in the middle of the night.

In closing controlling hunger can be a hard battle. The hunger pangs that will hit you will be strong and may last for a while. But with proper use of your buffer zones, and strong willpower you can keep them at bay. If you absolutely need something to eat try low calorie foods, or veggies. Carrots and celery are a lot better than low calorie yogurt our cookies. If you need someone to stay with you then call a friend and remind them that they owe you a favor. This is where you find out who your real friends are. Most good friends will take you up on the request, almost everyone has a laptop now so it’s not like they will be bored.
