Guidelines to Easy Weight Loss

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Weight is a universal factor of concern and few are the people who do not resort to some form or the other of a weight loss program and majority have one most popular query which is none other than How to lose weight quickly.

The most important thing to be kept in mind before starting any sort of diet or weight loss regime is that, don’t expect an overnight miracle. It’s essential to shed those extra kilos healthily and sustainably and not simply indulge in some fad or crash diets, diet pills, fasting etc which will prove to be detrimental to one’s heath, affecting major organs like heart fairly quickly.

Reducing your calorie intake per day teamed with proper exercise is the key to a healthy weight reduction program. How many calories do you normally consume in a day and by how much should you cut it down? These questions are best answered by a dietician or a nutritionist who can plan and chart out your diet regime for you. They are the best sources of information on how to lose weight quickly.

Try to substitute low fat and healthier options for the high calorie, starchy and carbohydrate rich diet you usually follow. Start your day with a healthy breakfast consisting of lots of fresh fruit, low sugar cereals, fruit smoothies and even eggs are recommended as they are not fatty. Make it a point never to skip this important meal.

Drinking plenty of water is on every agenda of weight loss programs. In fact the more you drink the more weight you shed. Water helps in boosting body metabolism thus causing the kidneys to flush out excessive waste.

Eating a fibre rich diet aids in the digestion process and is said to have a direct effect on weight reduction. High fibre foods are usually quite filling and low in calories. Examples are strawberries, apples, brown rice, chickpeas, beans and nuts.

Eat smaller meals but more frequently so that you never feel hungry but keep a track on the calories consumed each time. Stay away from aerated drinks which are rich in calories and substitute with water. Studies show that you tend to burn more by drinking ice cold water which requires the body to raise its temperature to heat the water to normal body temperature.

Chocolates and other sweets are so enticing yet each time you consume them be aware of the fact that they will quite visibly add on to your body fat, so it’s best to refrain from their consumption at least until some degree of control over your weight has been accomplished.

Quit snacking between meals which simply makes you put on extra flab. If you are one who enjoys tea and coffee sweetened with cream and sugar, it’s best to limit your intake of both these beverages. Last but not the least, select an exercise program that aids in weight loss as well as suits your constitution.

Should You Propose on Valentine’s Day?

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Valentine’s Day is a day that simply says “romance” to so many couples. It’s easy to see why this day might be a popular choice for a marriage proposal. But with Valentine’s Day being one of the most romantic days of the year – is it really the best day to pick for your marriage proposal? Or are expectations running a bit too high? Should you propose on this day or not? Let’s talk about the pro’s and the con’s for proposing on this occasion.

PRO: With romance on everyone’s mind, Valentine’s Day very well could be the perfect day. Many women receive marriage proposals on this day. There is simply romance in the air everywhere you go. Most restaurants offer romantic dinner specials. Flowers are plentiful and easy to find. Romance is all in the air – all around you. We think some of these marriage proposals may simply be inspired by the romantic day itself!

CON: A proposal on Valentine’s Day ruins the surprise experience. Many men say they want to see that look of joy and happiness as they surprise their love with their proposal. On Valentine’s Day, a marriage proposal may even be expected by some couples – as they have reached that point in their relationships. For many men they look forward to surprising their mates nearly as much as they do proposing to her. To propose on on this day means there is a lot less surprise factor. Something to keep in mind if you choose this date.

CON: A Valentine’s Day proposal is usually costly. From restaurants, florists and other entertainment, know they are at a premium for the day. They can charge up to 50% higher costs on this day than they could a week ago or a week later – simply because of that romantic and special day in February. By proposing earlier or later your proposal could be more extravagant or elegant in the way that you choose. Valentine’s day prices are sadly, always higher and not always for a good reason that the consumer can understand except for supply and demand.

How to Lose 100 Pounds in 6 Months Or at Least Come Close

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

If you’re wondering how to lose 100 pounds in 6 months I can say that it isn’t guaranteed that you’ll succeed. You will need to shed 16-17 pounds of your weight each and every month which is a real challenge. However, even if you don’t manage to lose 100 lbs in 6 months, you can come close. It’s mostly up to you, your level or commitment, motivation, and your knowledge.

1. The first thing you need to figure out is how you got to your current weight. This will help you make sure that you don’t make the same mistakes in the coming 6 months. Do you eat at bad restaurants? Do you eat too much in front of the TV without noticing it? Are you totally inactive during the day, sitting for too long?

Weight gain does not come out of the blue. Try to see what caused it and you will have your first actions steps to a change.

2. If you want to lose so much weight in such a small period of time, you will need to workout. At first, you may find this difficult as you’re likely out of shape. Some exercises may be too difficult to your to perform right now. For instance, running may not be good for your knees until you lose some weight but you can do as much walking as you like.

The key to effective fat burning workouts is to combine cardio with strength training. You won’t find a better and faster way to lose fat. Do 3–4 workouts each week, covering each and everyone of your muscle groups in a variety of strength exercises. After you do your strength workouts, do some cardio. It doesn’t have to be fast and furious at first. Just make sure you build a nice sweat and feel the exertion.

3. You will need to change your eating habits. Cutting down on your calories will likely be necessary as wll as changing how you eat and the composition of your calories. Make sure you eat more protein and fiber rich foods as they will help you boost your metabolism and curb your appetite. In addition, refrain from big meals. Train your body to thrive on small and tasty meals. Eating small and often can help you achieve a faster weight loss. You may be surprised by how easy it can be.

If changing your eating habits proves difficult, you should use some form of weight loss focused eating plan. One popular and effective plan is the Every other Day Diet. However, there are others that can also work.

I hope that you will succeed to lose 100 pounds in 6 months. However, even if you only come close, this is still a big achievement.

Does Hypnosis Work For Weight Loss?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Hypnosis conjures up images of a bearded man with piercing black eyes and a mesmerizing deep voice swinging a pendulum back and forth, chanting, “You are getting very sleeeeepy.” Hypnosis is terribly misunderstood and the only exposure to hypnosis most people will ever have is a Las Vegas stage show. But stage hypnosis for entertainment and hypnotherapy for behavior change are completely different animals. Could “real” hypnotherapy help you get leaner?

I’ve wondered the same thing myself for decades, since I first started bodybuilding.

In the late 1980’s, Dr. Judd Biasiotto published numerous books about the mind in sports including one called, “Hypnotize Me And Make Me Great.”

That 70-page book, which has long since gone out of print (but still holds a hallowed place on my shelf), was one of the books that sparked my interest in mind power and hypnosis.

In case you’re not familiar with strength sports, Dr. Judd is the guy who squatted 605 pounds at a body weight of 132 pounds – a staggering feat, as any powerlifter will tell you. When a world class lifter who also holds a PhD in sports psychology says there’s something to hypnosis, and that his mental training regimen was instrumental in his success, a teenage wannabe bodybuilder, desperate for muscle, listens!

All these years later, my interest in hypnosis and the powers of the mind have never waned. I’ve used self hypnosis as well as hypnosis CD’s, which were directed at improving performance in the gym, generating maximum intensity during workouts and pushing through the pain barrier. While I don’t see hypnosis as anything magical, I do believe it has been helpful. I also believe that a comprehensive mental training program, which may include hypnosis, can make or break your weight loss program success and give athletes a competitive advantage.

Any seasoned coach can tell you that which diet or training program you follow is irrelevant if you can’t follow it consistently. Many of the problems such as non-compliance, self-sabotage, inconsistency and lack of motivation are mind problems, not body problems.

One misconception about hypnosis is the fear that you’ll lose command of your faculties during a session or that it’s some kind of “mind control.” This is not true to any greater degree than your family, friends, peers or culture have “controlled” your mind.

The fact is, the mind is amenable to suggestion, (especially the mind of a very young child), and in that sense everything is hypnosis. Reading the newspaper or watching TV is hypnosis or “mental programming” in one sense. You get “programmed” by societal norms to become one of the masses, unless you make a choice to be different and become what you want to be.

Another source of misconceptions about hypnosis comes from stage hypnosis, which has virtually nothing to do with hypnotherapy for personal change. The stage hypnotist intentionally ferrets out the most susceptible individuals in his audience – who happen to be willing participants – and then induces some hypnotic phenomenon for entertainment value.

Hypnosis, as used in personal change work, is simply a relaxed state of altered consciousness and heightened focus where the conscious mind gets out of the way, allowing a message from the hypnotherapist to reach your subconscious more easily. When your subconscious gets the message, it stimulates positive behaviors, so hypnosis is simply a tool for behavior change.

Self hypnosis (by yourself), is as simple as taking long, deep breaths, getting relaxed (sometimes using progressive muscle relaxation techniques), then doing your visualization or repeating affirmations, or even listening to your own home-made affirmations tape.

Many people report great success with hypnosis, but others do not. The mixed results probably have to do with the practitioner, and some with the subject. What kind of results can you expect from hypnosis? Could hypnosis help you lose weight or change your body in other ways?

I believe that there is a mind-body link and that it’s entirely possible that the brain, central nervous system and subconscious mind can literally “talk” to the various cells of your body and that this may be a factor in healing from illnesses. I believe that the body is a remarkable self-healing machine and its own natural pharmacy.

I think it’s pretty difficult to prove, but being that a legitimate science exists on this subject (it’s called psychoneuroimmunology), the scientific community seems to think enough of the mind-body connection to spend time, money and resources to formally investigate it. There are many exciting and plausible theories. We also have the placebo effect to consider, where a belief can affect biology in truly amazing ways.

That said, when it comes to hypnosis, I think you should view it with an eye of caution as well as interest. First and foremost, and perhaps exclusively, you should see hypnosis as a tool to change behavior. When you look at a claim made for hypnosis, you should ask yourself whether that claim is a result that can be achieved through a change in your behavior.

For example, if someone promotes hypnosis for muscle growth, is it possible that your behavior might change in a way that you gain more muscle? The answer is yes. The hypnosis might help you change your eating habits, and you might just push yourself harder in the gym. Therefore, the muscle growth occurs as a result of behavior change – eating better and training harder – rather than the hypnosis itself.

It’s the same with body fat reduction: Will hypnosis magically increase your metabolism from a mind body connection? While I like to keep an open mind, I seriously doubt it and I’m not too enthused about hypnotherapists who say they will hypnotize you and your metabolism will speed up. If it can happen, I’m not sure it will ever be provable using the scientific method, so it may ultimately come down to your will to believe the claims.

So, could hypnosis help with breast enlargement? Well, maybe. A thought might bubble up from your subconscious mind that it’s a good idea to save up your money, go visit the doctor, and fork over the three grand for implants (sarcasm intended).

Guys, I could give the same warning about hypnosis for enlargement of your…. uh… your amount of hair… yeah, hair growth, that’s it… watch out for those hair growth hypnosis claims. I’m not so sure I believe them (grin).

What about weight loss?

Although the results are not definitive, there’s some clinical psychology research that’s been published in peer reviewed journals which shows successful results from hypnosis for weight loss. In part 2 of this series, you’ll hear more about what those studies found.

Even more eye-opening in my view are some of the documented cases of medical hypnosis, which range from simple pain relief from dental work to surgery without anesthesia (which is pretty freaky if you think about it). The mind does affect the body.

In my opinion, hypnosis sessions or hypnosis CD’s can be a valuable adjunct to a comprehensive fitness, nutrition and lifestyle program for some people, if you get them from a reputable and skilled hypnotherapist.

Even better, I believe the ideal type of session would include conscious coaching and education as well as traditional hypnosis, not just a passive situation where you listen and expect your mind to be positively “programmed.”

Then again, I think this is why weight loss hypnosis CDs sell like gangbusters, because they’re often sold under the pretense that you do absolutely nothing. Just listen and get slim – the perfect “quick fix.”

I don’t think it’s that simple or easy. You have to accept responsibility for change, take an active role in creating change and have a bias for action if you really want to be successful. You have to work on the physical and mental plane simultaneously not just “think positive” or rely on self help CD’s of any kind.

So while I DO believe hypnosis can be a valuable tool, at the end of the day, programming your mind for success all boils down to what you say to yourself (and see/read/listen to), most of the time. You can’t work with a hypnotherapist every day for the rest of your life, but you do talk to yourself non stop every single day, and repetition is a proven way to condition the mind.

The way you talk to yourself, most of the time, IS “hypnosis” if you think about it… it’s self-hypnosis.

If you already have a structured training and nutrition plan, but you’re having challenges with the behavior change side of things, I hypnosis or positive mental programming CD’s might be worth trying as an additional tool in your “mental training” took kit.

Just remember that in the long run, you are your own best hypnotherapist and when it comes to the claims, let the buyer beware.

The Four Steps to Treating Adrenal Fatigue

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

If fatigue has taken a hold of you and you have ruled out other illnesses like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome then you may have adrenal fatigue. It is estimated that 70% of all people have it. Fatigue is a sign of stress and stress as well all know leads to some major medical issues including heart problems.

Four key steps to treating adrenal fatigue

One- Get more sleep and relaxation

We are in a society that is busy and fast paced. We have little time or more simply we make little time to relax. We do not sleep well or long enough and we rarely take and “me” time. All this fast paced stuff only increases your stress level and puts more and more demand on our adrenal glands. The hormones just can not pump out enough to deal with the level of stress we are trying to. As most of our organs need time to regroup and recover so do our adrenal glands. We must learn to give them time to recover.

The job of the adrenal glands is to keep our hormone levels at the proper amount. They are known as the anti stress hormones, but they can only do their job if allowed the proper amount of time to rest and recover. Science says this amount is 8-9 hours a night for it to be able to function properly during the day when called upon.

Not only do our everyday routines place stress on our bodies but to a great degree on our emotions and minds too. If you do not allow your minds to distress then your life will stress out and you will become severely fatigued. If you think being tired at the end of the day is bad, just wait until you are tired out after getting up in the morning.

You can see how important it is when you realize that because of medically studies that the state employments departments make all employers give their employees recommended breaks each shift. This is because they found that allowing the worker to rest, their energies are recovered and they can work more efficiently.

Two- Work on reducing stress in your life

Wikipedia defines stress as a term that refers to the consequence of the failure of an organism – human or animal – to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats, whether actual or imagined.

It is obvious that in America today it is virtually impossible to live a life that is totally stress free. It is a fact of life that stress is life, our goal has got to be to find ways to reduce the stress. Sounds simple when you write it, but it really is a rather difficult thing to do. Especially since by the time you need to reduce it, it is already pretty much consuming you.

There is a stress hormone called cortisol that is released by the adrenal glands to help us cope with and then to recover from stress. This is the hormone that is best known as the “flight or fight” response hormone. It acts just like adrenaline. The difference is that adrenaline is short acting to get us out of danger; cortisol is the long term hormone that allows up the energy to perform normal tasks.

When are limited supply of cortisol is used up and we do not allow our bodies times to recover that is when we start having fatigue symptoms. There are things each day you can do to relieve the stress in your life. First off, take time to unwind everyday. A few minutes here and there is all it takes. Try to not get upset over everything and pick your battles. Do not stress over problems you can not change. Do not argue over politics and religion and things that rile you up but really go no where. If you are upset all the time then your stress level is too high all the time.

Besides taking time out to relax, do something with that time that you will enjoy. Do a hobby, go for a relaxing walk, engage in some activity that destresses you.

Three- Take the needed vitamins, minerals and supplements that will help your body

A good multi vitamin will help your body handle stress. There are even companies that make formulas geared to “stress”. They will have additions of minerals that help the body’s immunities and to recover from stressful situations.

Some of the more important vitamins to take for adrenal fatigue are B5, B6, B12 and Vitamin C. The important minerals seem to be magnesium and zinc. Natural supplements are licorice, DHEA and Echinacea

Four- Try regular exercise

Our bodies are made to move. So exercise is a vital component to strengthening the body. Science shows that with regular exercise, the hormones in our body are circulated better and therefore metabolize easier. Cortisol, the main stress hormone also regulates our blood sugar and is one reason that exercise helps in the process.

When you first decide to exercise do not go hog wild and run a marathon. It is important that you build your tolerance up slowly. If you overdo it you will put your recovery back. So remember to pace yourself and do not engage in competitive sports. Start out by walking, it’s a good exercise that is easy on your body and yet allows you to build up to walking more and more and thus getting stronger. When you are stronger then you can think of jogging or speed walking. Start with 20 minutes three times a week and increase to five times a week before increasing the time.

If you incorporate just these four steps into your personal adrenal fatigue routine then you will see noteworthy advancement of health for most of the symptoms. These simple changes in your life will enable you to treat and live with adrenal fatigue.

Control Your Hunger, Get the Body You Deserve

Monday, February 1st, 2010

When undergoing a weight loss routine you may have sudden uncontrollable urges to eat. Dealing with these urges is important, because if you give into them you will deviate from your course, and you do not want to do that. Controlling hunger can vary in difficulty from person to person but there are a few things you can do to take care of it. Again no one said losing weight was going to be easy.

Unless you’re one of the people that suffers from high acid production and needs to eat or suffer heartburn the rest of the night, simply denying the hunger pang can work. This takes a lot of willpower and doesn’t always work out. Remind yourself that you need to avoid eating this late in order to reach your long term goal. Remind yourself why you are doing this in the first place. If all else falls remind yourself that your sensei won’t acknowledge you as a man if you don’t fight off the urge. If any of you get the joke in the last part I’m going to be disturbed and go hide somewhere.

Now onto more serious matters, what can you do to fight off hunger pangs? Well one thing you can do when you establish your diet is make a buffer zone. A buffer zone is an amount of calories, carbs, and fats, which you allow yourself in the event something like this happens. You always maintain the buffer zone and work it into your calculations. That way if you absolutely need to eat you can do this without messing up your routine.

You don’t necessarily have to eat anything high in calories to get the pangs to stop. Normally just eating anything will make your stomach shut up. But make sure it’s healthy, one bowl of ice cream can mess you up for the week. There are great deals of foods that can help you control these midnight urges. Of course I shouldn’t say midnight urges, they can strike any time, and even wake you up if they are bad enough.

First and foremost remember that in most cases you have a lot of acid in your stomach that needs something to do, that may be why you are hungry. So try eating a piece of bread, or other absorbing food. It may not be the tastiest but it’s definitely not the worst thing to eat when this hits. You can also try having single serving low calorie yogurts on hand. Or low calorie ice cream, again watch the amount. But again it all comes back to will power.

Being able to resist the pang, and if you must eat eating only so much can be a very taxing thing to do. Controlling hunger is never easy. If you do decide to give into the pang then you may lose control and start eating everything in sight, in addition to what you had in your buffer zone. This is a bad thing, of course that goes without telling.

Another reason you may be experiencing hunger pangs is because your body is use to a higher food intake. You will be hungry out of habit of constantly being full. But needing to be full doesn’t mean you need to eat a lot. There are many foods that fill a person; these include foods with fiber and whole grains. They tend to make your stomach think it’s full and will quiet it down. Veggies and fruits can also help. If that doesn’t work try nuts with low sodium content, not many just a few.

The physiological factor of always having to eat is probably one of the biggest things people have to fight off when they start a weight loss routine. The mind has fallen into a habit of eating three or four big meals a day and is now stuck with two or three normal sized meals. Not to mention some kind of health dessert instead of cake or ice cream. This can make your system go haywire at first, but after it’s under control you will still suffer hunger pangs.

Stopping them completely isn’t a real possibility. Even after you lose to your target weight you will still get them. By that time hopefully you are strong enough to resist them, if not keep up your buffer zone. Many people have reached their goals only to fall backwards because they lost their self control. This can be a very painful thing to recover from, so keep up your willpower and resist the pangs.

Some people are able to resist them by themselves, but if you find you need help then call your friends, and or support group. They can stay with you and remind you not to eat should the hunger pang arrive. Some may in fact swat you on the head with something if they catch you eating, but they are doing it because they care about you, not because they hate you. After all it takes a real friend to spend the night at someone’s house and keep them from eating in the middle of the night.

In closing controlling hunger can be a hard battle. The hunger pangs that will hit you will be strong and may last for a while. But with proper use of your buffer zones, and strong willpower you can keep them at bay. If you absolutely need something to eat try low calorie foods, or veggies. Carrots and celery are a lot better than low calorie yogurt our cookies. If you need someone to stay with you then call a friend and remind them that they owe you a favor. This is where you find out who your real friends are. Most good friends will take you up on the request, almost everyone has a laptop now so it’s not like they will be bored.

3 Natural Homeopathic Acne Tips That Will Help Your Skin

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Acne me one of the most horrible things that you can suffer from. It may not seem like much compared to other ailments, but everyone sees it when they look at you. Like you, I suffered from acne for the longest time growing up (and still do on occasion). It was definitely one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever had to deal with. And that is why I want to give you some natural, easy tips that can help you with your acne.

The first step is that you need to wash your hands much more frequently than you currently are used to. As we go throughout our day we end up handling lots of dirty things, such as money, papers, or surfaces of objects. Oil builds up on your fingers and it becomes very easy to transfer it to your face. So wash often!

The second tip is that you need to wash your sheets much more frequently. You accumulate oils from your face on the sheets. Keeping them washed means that you are not transferring this oil back onto your skin every time you sleep.

The final tip is to start eating healthier. Avoid greasy foods, such as french fries and the like and you’ll be much better off. It’s common sense but it does actually help you.

I hope that these homeopathic acne treatment tips can help make a difference in your skin. A few simple changes such as those that I have suggested really add up to huge changes. Trust me, your skin will thank you.

Ethics

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I’ve been planning to write on the topic of ethics and integrity (E
