Top 5 Reasons to Choose WordPress As a Blogging Platform

January 23rd, 2010

If you are a blogger and have not used WordPress already, you should definitely give it a try now because you are missing much. In this article I will talk about top five reasons that makes WordPress the number one blogging platform in the world.

1. WordPress is free.

WordPress is an open source blogging platform that is shared for free. You can use as many copies of WordPress on your sites as you like. In addition you can customize the source code to meet your needs if you have some experience in coding.

2. WordPress is highly customizable.

Have you ever encountered two WordPress sites that look identical? I guess not. This is because WordPress is so flexible that you can change almost anything regarding the design and layout easily even if you do not know what HTML is. This is one of the most appealing features of WordPress that makes it so popular among millions of bloggers.

3. There are thousands of themes to use.

If you do a fast search on Google, I am sure you will find tens, if not hundreds, of websites that offer WordPress themes either free or paid. I know some websites offering more than a thousand free themes. That is a really good thing to have, which makes it easy to find a theme that is related to the topic of your blog. If you plan to spend some money, you can buy really nice looking themes and have a new one created if you can not find the exact theme you are looking for.

4. WordPress has great plugins.

Plugins are what makes life easier with WordPress. As WordPress is open source, each day new plugins are going public. Some of them are free and some of them are paid. From contact forms to social bookmarking tools and SEO tools, WordPress now has a great archive of plugins each designed to serve a specific need. This is one of the most powerful aspects of WordPress.

5. WordPress is search engine friendly.

Google loves WordPress and sites created by WordPress are indexed fast and rank well. Being already SEO friendly, in addition, there are lots of plugins that are used to make it better.

You Are What You Eat – Today’s Diet Compared to the Healthiest Times

January 23rd, 2010

Get this – our digestive system has undergone very little change over the past several thousand years, yet our diet has changed so rapidly that some think our stomachs are unable to keep pace with it. And therein lies the root of many modern-day nutrition and diet related issues.

Just think about it – did our grandparents’ daily diet include a double cheese burger with a large soda and fries thrown in for good measure? Did they drink cups after cups of coffee to bust stress? Were they inundated with canned and processed food choices at the local supermarkets? Did they go days without having fruits and vegetables in their meal? We, on the other hand, routinely indulge in these supremely unhealthy food habits.

It’s evident that we compare poorly to our grandparents’ generation as far as food choices are concerned. But there is a school of thought that goes a step ahead and believes we should go back even further in time and compare our modern diet to the dietary habits prevailing in the Paleolithic era some 20,000 years ago to assess its quality. The rationale given behind such a comparison is that genetically, human bodies have changed little since that time while food habits have altered to an unrecognizable extent.

Hunter Gatherer Diet

Our ancestors during the Paleolithic era hunted and gathered foods rather than depending on mass agricultural products. This type of diet, also known as the Stone Age diet or the caveman diet, constituted mainly of wild plants and animals that could be hunted and gathered such as wild game meats, seafood, fruits, nuts, vegetables, etc.

The hunters and gatherers are cited as being the healthiest down the civilizations. However, there was a decline in human health with the advent of agricultural settlements during the Neolithic era. This was also accompanied by the lack of physical labor involved in the hunting and gathering of food. Since then, human health continues to deteriorate owing to modern day food habits and lifestyles.

In contrast to the hunter gatherer diet, the modern day diets lack in fiber as we hardly consume any fruits and vegetables. In fact, Americans get almost 70 percent of total daily energy from foods like dairy products, cereals, refined sugars, processed vegetable oils, and alcohol. In fact, such are the limitations of a modern diet that an average American consumes mostly fat and starch in his food. Add to this foods laden with additives, preservatives, antibiotics, hormones, etc. that find their way to our tables and lo and behold, you have a recipe for disaster!

That is why proponents of the hunter gatherer diet advocate replicating the dietary habits of our ancestors during the Paleolithic era. The basic surmise behind this advocacy is that our genetic composition is adapted to the Paleolithic diet and our system tends to discard all foods that were not or scarcely available at that time.

The modern Paleolithic diet consists mainly of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts, and excludes foods that were never or rarely consumed before the Neolithic and industrial eras such as grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.

This kind of diet has its takers as well as opponents, but truth be told many people may not find it feasible, affordable, or appealing to follow a strictly Paleolithic diet.

Personal Health Plan

The key here is to find your own nutritional balance and work out a personal healthy eating plan without having to deprive yourself of the foods you love. The importance of eating a balanced, fiber-rich diet cannot be stressed enough.

The mantra for good health is to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes that are a rich source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. In addition to this, limit your intake of refined sugar, salt, and processed food. Include a wide variety of food in your diet rather than just animal-based products and eat in moderation. Last, but not the least, drink plenty of water and get 30 minutes of exercise every day.

Colon Cleansing

A healthy diet plan should lead to a healthy digestive system and a healthy you. However, it is still possible to experience gastrointestinal and bowel discomfort from time to time. In such a scenario, it may help to flush out wastes and toxins from the body through colon cleanse.

Colon cleanse therapies include colon hydrotherapy, enema, and laxatives. But these days, natural and herbal colon cleanse products are rising in popularity as they are gentle on the system and aid quick and effective colon cleanse. These herbal colon cleanse products can be bought at any health store or even purchased online.

Complete herbal colon cleanse programs such as BeneCleanse are a safe, easy to use and effective way to promote intestinal hygiene. The colon cleanse program, formulated by a medical doctor, is based on 25 years of scientific research and each ingredient is scientifically supported for its purity, potency, and effectiveness.

Clearly, when it comes to healthy living, going back to the basics may not be a bad idea. And complementing it with a comprehensive colon cleanse program is better still!

Password Website – The First 7 Steps to Starting Your Membership Website

January 22nd, 2010

Password websites are a great way to get a practically passive income online teaching what you already know and love. It doesn’t get better than that, but getting started can be challenging. Often people who have the skills and drive to be successful never get off the ground because they just don’t have a clear path for getting started.

One of the biggest mistakes is assuming that the first thing you should do is set up your password site. Now, let me clarify if you already have a list of prospects and clients and you want to create a profitable password website then the next step would be to survey your list and start building your password website. But for the remainder of this article I am just going to assume that you are starting from scratch.

Here are some steps that will help you get your password website started and put profits in your pocket in no time.

1. Determine your niche.
Believe it or not, some people are so anxious to set up their site that they buy domain names and start downloading software for their password website before they are even certain about their niche. Not a good idea. Although this part can be difficult because although you have to put a little thought into it you can’t see a physical result for your effort yet. Hang in there it won’t be long.

2. Get your .com and hosting set up.
There are lots of places to do this and if you already have a favorite company to work with no problem. Personally I get my sites from Name Cheap, because they are cheap, and host at Host Gator because they are inexpensive and reliable. If you want feel free to look them up on the web.

3. Get an auto responder.
You will want to find a company to collect and manage your prospects e-mail addresses as well as send out scheduled pre-written e-mails.

4. Set up squeeze page.
You will need a place to send people where you can collect their contact information and they can get their free gift.

5. Create free valuable gift.
You need to create something that will 1. Get your prospects attention. 2. Motivate them to want to give you their contact information and receive further correspondence from you. 3. Create respects, and expert status so if they want additional help they will naturally turn to you.

6. Promote your free gift to build a seed list.
Now that you have a great gift and a place for people to get it you need to find them and tell them about it. Article marketing is my personal favorite way to do this. You can also use paid advertising like pay per click, and trade magazines, or utilize other free forms of marketing like blogs, and social media.

7. Survey list
Talk to your new list of prospects so that you can send them regular e-mails that are valuable to them and eventually create a product and password website that is exactly what they are looking for.

Living a Passionate Life – How to Believe in Yourself

January 22nd, 2010

Designing a passionate life requires belief in yourself, your Source, and the process. The first step is to decide that you want your life to look differently and that you want to be passionate about your life. This requires clarity.

Develop a Vision
One thing is for sure, if you don’t know what your passions are and you don’t know what you want your life to look like, you will end up with exactly what you have. Maybe it’s pretty good. That’s great, but can it be better? If it isn’t so great, what don’t you like about it?

Without a clear idea of what it means to you to live passionately, you will not know what to focus on or what to take action on and as a result, you won’t believe in yourself. In order to believe in yourself, you have to have a vision and believe in your vision and then decide to go after your vision.

Start a Gratitude Journal
It’s really easy to get caught up in the, when I have this, I’ll be happy syndrome. Life is happening while you are making plans. Recognize what you have right now. Prove it to yourself, write it down. What are you grateful for right now. Don’t just verbalize it, for one week; write down 10 things every day that you are grateful for. You can’t repeat anything from day to day. So you’ll end up with 70 unique items that you are grateful for.

Have a Conversation with Your Inner Guide
Call on your inner guide. If you are upset, then get mad, get it out, and scream if you want to. Let the emotions fly. Just make sure no one else is around or they may think you’ve lost it. After you express your emotions, ask for answers, love, and guidance. Perhaps you’ll notice a shift in your thoughts. If this approach doesn’t work for you, then use journaling or meditation.

Establish a Daily Practice
What your life looks like is the result of a thousand small thoughts and resulting actions each day. Just imagine if you could change one or two of those thoughts and actions each day. How different would you life be? Designing a passionate life is a mindset. If you want change to occur, then decide to change. Perhaps your daily practice is to meditate, write in your gratitude journal, pray, or listen to uplifting music. Design a practice that uplifts you and keeps you positive and in the flow.

You will be amazed how you will start to believe in your vision and your ability to make those changes. It doesn’t happen by accident; you, your Source, and the process make it happen.

Speaking Tips – Blogging For Speakers

January 21st, 2010

What is the point of a blog? I have heard, read, and even asked this question myself in the past. In an early assessment, I thought that a blogger fell into one of these categories:

1. Someone who wanted to be discovered as a writer or reporter.
2. Someone with way too much free time on their hands.
3. Someone with a bone to pick with a segment of society (i.e. politicians, other bloggers or the local electric company).
4. Someone just slightly insane.
5. All of the above.

Upon further review, I have discovered an interesting mix of the above, as well as some completely normal people out there using blogs to get their message out. And, believe it or not, there are some pretty good messages working their way out into the world. This brings me to the point of this post: How blogging can help your writing and speaking skills.

A few months back, I read a book called World Class Speaking, and in that book one of the authors, Craig Valentine, talks about the power of writing every day and how it was integral to his success. He issues the challenge to the reader to make a personal pledge to write a set number of words each and every day. His number was 747, which has an obvious connotation for most people. For craig, it helped him think about his ideas taking flight. When I first read this, I thought, “Gee, that sounds like a good idea…”. Then I went on with my life.

After a bit of time, and an opportunity to meet Craig in person, I realized that this goal was not just integral to my future success, it was critical! As a person who wants to see success as a speaker, writing is – frankly – the only way to get there from here. If I ever want to create anything in life, I need to be a better writer. Some examples include:

1. Any type of speeches
2. Books
3. Checklists (like I have on my website)
4. Training Sessions
5. Newsletters
…you get the idea

Some of you might be thinking “I can give speeches without writing…”. Here is the truth: Not if you want to be successful doing it.

As for the rest of those examples, it is the same answer. You may question the need to write every day, or post to a blog nearly every day like I do. My answer? You do not need to blog every day,or post your work to be seen by others. It is a pretty big leap of faith to feel comfortable putting your words on display at all, much less every day. Should you write every day? Yes. 747 words? hmmm…that is your call. I personally shoot for 300, but I do make a note when I have more than 747, just because I find it interesting to meet that challenge from time-to-time.

For my goal, the idea was to write a topic about speaking, leadership or project management every day. The reasons I chose the blog (and WordPress) format are:

1. It allows me to see how my work looks “in public”
2. It allows me to collect comments and feedback
3. It keeps me honest (I have been asked, “What are you going to write about today?”)
4. I thought it might be fun (!)
5. I wanted to protect my “Talk to the Human™” idea, so this made it publicly mine.

This does not mean every post has to be your best work. I’ve written posts that were not my best. However, for every one of those posts, there is at least one I think would make a good article, of feed into a chapter in a book.

In the end, only you can decide if blogging is the way you want to put your thoughts on paper, or if actual paper might be the better choice. If you do decide to blog, I recommend you follow these few tips:

1. Do not commit to posting every day. Try every week, then add “bonus content” if you want to post more.
2. Do not worry about the theme at first. Find your voice and the theme will present itself.
3. Do not worry about background colors at first either. You can (and should) make changes over time.
4. Do not type anything in a blog you would not be willing to say in a meeting with your boss and their boss.
5. Do not do this all by yourself. Encourage “guest columnists” and Talk to some Humans™ about your posts.
6. Be explicit about your goals, and do not post material unless it helps you reach those goals. Unless it’s funny.
7. Sharpen the Saw…oops, that is Covey’s seventh thing. Well, do that too. Take a college class to brush up on your skills. It will show!

Whether you blog, write to a file, or handwrite your thoughts, taking the time to write everyday can make a powerful difference in who you are, who you become, and what you will accomplish. Not only will your writing improve over time, but you will find stories about yourself that you had forgotten, as well as some great ideas for new ones. If you are a speaker, you will be amazed at all of the “new” content that was already available in your very own head. Getting it out on paper will make it forever accessible, and set you up with topics to inspire audiences far and wide (disclaimer: your audiences may vary). Give it a 30-day trial run. Write 300 words a day for 30 days, and send me a note when you get there. I would like to hear the results, and I will be glad to post your thoughts on my blog (it will save me some work).

Start with this line: I _________________ will write no less than _______ words per day for the next 30 days.

You can do it, human.

How to Build a Website in 5 Easy Steps For Beginners

January 21st, 2010

I have seen many articles written about how to build a website or blog. For the most part I feel like they all leave beginners with many unanswered questions. Here I outline the fastest, simplest, and cheapest way to build your own website or blog from scratch without writing any HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) code. If you don’t know what the heck HTML code is, good, don’t worry about it.

Step 1. Find a good web hosting company to host your website. This is how your website can exist and be found on the Internet. Without having your website hosted, there will be no way for anyone to gain access to it online. Web hosting can range anywhere from free to upwards of $200 a month. We will be focusing on hosting that will cost between $4 and $20 a month.

If you want the easiest way to build a website, you will be looking for a host that provides “site builder” software. Site builder software is a program that let’s you build your website by selecting pre made templates or themes and arranging the items on your web pages the way you want them to look. The only real trouble with something like this is you will be very limited on how much control you have over the final look of your pages. You will be working with pre made templates that only let you do so much with it. This is why most people (myself included) seem to outgrow this type of web hosting company in a hurry. Not to mention that these conveniences are what makes the price of hosting closer to the $20 range.

The type of hosting that I will recommend for someone starting out is a host that offers a site builder as well as open source software installation such as WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal. This type of hosting is used by the majority of websites you see online. This type of hosting will run you between $4 and $10 a month. The open source software is free as well as being very popular and quite good. This type of software is often referred to as a content management system or CMS. A CMS will allow you many options for adding content to your website as well as choosing the layout and the look of your web pages. You will be able to add not only text, but photos, video, and audio as well. Out of the above choices for a CMS, WordPress is the one that I recommend and use due to it’s popularity and quick learning curve. Joomla and Drupal are very nice and powerful CMSs also, but they have a bit of a steeper learning curve.

Step 2. The next step in building a website is choosing a domain name for your site. A domain name is the phone number for your website. It is the name people type in to their browser, such as (www.google.com).

Step 3. Once you pick the right hosting, domain name, and CMS for your website, the next step is to install the CMS software to the “back end” of your website. The back end of your website is only available to you. The general public only sees the front end when they visit your site. Installing the CMS is done right from your control panel that you will receive from your hosting company after you sign up. The control panel is nothing more than a private page from your web hosting company that only you and the hosting company have access to. The software installation is really easy because most good hosting companies have it set up so you can add what ever CMS you want automatically. You just need to follow the onscreen instructions and set up your user name, password, and the name of your blog or website. It really is quite simple to do if you choose a reputable hosting company.

Step 4. Now it’s time to choose a theme or a template for your website. A theme or template is similar to what I was talking about for a site builder. It is a pre designed look and layout for your web pages. The big difference between a site builder and a CMS is, with a CMS you have virtually limitless choices to pick from. WordPress has many free templates you can use for your website and they are getting better all the time.

Step 5. The only thing left to do now is add all of your content to your website. Since you chose a good CMS, this part of the job is the most fun. There is nothing quite like seeing all of your web pages come together as a finished product.

Advice For Starting a New Business Website

January 21st, 2010

If you’re planning on launching a new business website there are a lot of considerations that should be made before you think about commissioning a web designer. The number one mistake people make is to consider SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) as an afterthought. SEO should be prioritized right from the start and should be a key element of the brief to your chosen designer. Pre-development SEO issues include:

Choosing a domain

Many people are wary of the perceived “Google sandbox effect”. The theory goes that brand new domains are potentially “on hold” from ranking on Google until they have established trust and quality backlinks. Although this is still very much open to debate and opinion; new website owners should not worry themselves with this issue too much. Instead, energies would be much better invested in areas such as keyword research, competitor analysis and content strategy. Keyword research, in particular, could help you to make an informed choice on your domain name. For example, let’s say you’re planning on setting up a cleaning business in Cambridge. The first step you should take is to use a keyword research tool, such as Wordtracker, to investigate the phrases people use to look for cleaning companies. You might discover that there is a relatively large volume of people searching on the term “Cleaning Company Cambridge”. Should this be the case it would be worth finding out if the domain cleaningcompanycambridge.com is available. Using a domain name that integrates one of your main target key-phrases will often help you to rank in the search engines on that particular term.

Keyword research

Don’t worry too much if you can’t secure the specific domain name you are after. If your website is engineered correctly, you should be able to generate pages that integrate your chosen keywords into the URL structure. The important thing is to know which keywords you’re going to target before you brief your designer. Your designer should then build your site with both these keywords in mind and the flexibility to add more pages further down the line. What you don’t want is a website navigation scheme that severely limits your ability to add new content aimed at targeting new keywords.

Competitor analysis

Finding out how many other businesses are targeting the same keywords is also a crucial consideration before you go ahead and design your website. Assuming that you will be able to rank on the term “Cleaning Business”, for example, could be a costly mistake if you suddenly realise post-development that this is an already saturated market. You should also use either SEO software or an experienced SEO consultant to look at factors such as your competitors’ domain and website age, inbound links and content. If you discover an abundance of established websites with great quality content then be prepared for the long haul if you wish to rank well on similar terms to these sites.

Content strategy

The fundamental mistake people make when planning new websites is to assume that the content can be written, uploaded and then left to sell itself. Content for new websites needs to be dynamic, interactive and consistently developed. This is because search engines love new content. Websites that are effectively static “info” pages, left for long periods of time without any changes, will not perform as well in the search engines as websites that provide a constant flow of fresh, original and genuinely useful content. The key is to put in place a strategy for making your site the authoritative voice on your sector or subject. Key considerations include: developing the volume of pages on your site over specific timeframes; integrating a blog into your website; creating a social media strategy to engage your site content with the wider web; syndicating useful content across third party sites and considering other marketing methods such as viral to spread the word about your new content.

Site design

Once you’ve established your target keywords, analysed the competition and thought through your plan for content generation you are pretty much ready to start writing the brief for your designer. The crucial step, however, is to find a designer who knows how to build search engine friendly websites. Web design is now a thoroughly saturated market itself, and many designers offer the Earth for next to no money. Be very careful when opting for cheap web design. Make sure you ask lots of questions about the functionality and flexibility of the navigation scheme they are proposing. Ensure that they integrate a search friendly Content Management System in order to allow you greater control over your web development. Low budget business planners should consider commissioning a designer to create a custom WordPress theme. WordPress is built to be search engine friendly and a good designer will be able to create a great, commercial looking website using this technology. The added bonus of an already built-in blog will give you a head-start on the content strategy front.

Create a great experience for the user

Targeting specific keywords is a perfectly legitimate exercise but never forget your end user. Poorly written web copy that is optimised well for the search engines might impress Google’s algorithm for a while but if it doesn’t impress your website visitors you won’t rank well for long. Your website should always have your users’ and potential customers’ best interests at heart. The key is to engage your website visitor to explore as much of your content as possible. If your site has a high bounce rate (people clicking off without exploring beyond the landing page they arrive at), your site could be flagged up as a low quality. Therefore you need to entice your visitors to explore as much as possible. Offer tips, advice, news, offers and, again, genuinely useful content. Encourage your users to share their opinions, comment on your content and recommend your site to their friends. Place a lot of consideration into the look, feel and style of your site. Employing a brand consultant can be expensive but can have a huge benefit in the long term. Establishing your brand is all about setting out your stall, appealing directly to your market and ensuring that you convey the most appropriate and professional looking image.

Launching your site

Following these steps you should now be at the point where you have a great looking, quality website featuring an abundance of informative and useful content. Now comes the tricky and on-going process of developing traffic. A user focused link building strategy is paramount but time consuming. You may wish to employ a link building consultant, however, be very wary of purchasing cheap links from an SEO provider. Modern link building strategies should always bear the end user in mind and links to your site should be on-topic and relevant. Instant traffic can be generated initially through paid search advertising and, so long as your content is of a high standard, can also help you to build natural links. Offline promotions combined with online PR and advertising should also be considered. Finally, don’t forget to offer a subscribe option to your users. You need to build loyalty and trust and a growing database will help you to continually keep your users’ and customers’ up to date.

An Electric Range Cooker You’ll Love

January 20th, 2010

If you’re looking for an electric range cooker the Maytag Gemini MER6772 electric range cooker has many features you may fall in love with. One feature you’ll love about this range visits easy to clean glass top. There are no gas emitters or metal stands for pots and pans to sit on while cooking. You simply wait for the stovetop to cool down and wipe it down with a damp rag or paper towel and you’re done.

The Gemini range has two ovens, which is great for larger families where there are many people to feed and many dishes to cook simultaneously. Before we bought this model, we have a KitchenAid gas stove and it was very hard to clean around the gas emitting burners, and not only that, we frequently overcook items accidentally which led to overflowing pots and pans. This of course leads to the cleanup job that is especially tedious. So if you love to cook, and don’t mind buying an electric range cooker that may be a bit on the pricey side, you’ll especially love the Gemini.

The Gemini comes with a one-year warranty which many people find comforting when they purchase. This means if something breaks (I use very heavy cast-iron cookware), I don’t have to worry about shelling out a bunch of cash for replacement. Even though I did like some features of the KitchenAid gas up and we had previously, such as, the ability to cook dishes a little bit faster due to the fire burners, the cleaning issue was just too tedious and annoying to deal with on a regular basis.

As far as the physical appearance of the Gemini goes, you can choose either stainless steel or black, but of course these days most people prefer stainless steel since it looks a bit more contemporary and modern. Of course the stainless steel does cost a little bit more, but the look of the stainless steel is just so clean. The one drawback of stainless steel is that it’s relatively easy to scratch if going against the direction of the steel.

So if you’re in the market for a new electric range cooker, I definitely recommend Maytag Gemini. But again, I am partial to kitchen appliances that are easy to clean and there are so many other considerations to factor in when deciding on such things.
